Women in Armed Forces

Becraft, Carolyn . "Facts About Women in the Military". Feminism and Women's Studies. 04/19/2010 <http://feminism.eserver.org/workplace/professions/women-in-the-military.txt/document_view>.

This article is from the Women's Research and Education Institute. They provided a great overview of women in the military and their continuous growth. The article also displayed the different roles women have had in combat in the military. What I found tobe the most useful bit of information from their research was the proportion of jobs available to women in each branch. This is very useful if you want to demonstrate discrimination towards women by the military. Overall, I found the article to be useful and provided good information.

"Highlights in the History of Military Women". Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation. 04/18/2010 <http://www.womensmemorial.org/Education/timeline.html>.

This website was very helpful. It listed every important date for women in the United States military. It noted dates that effected women as a whole, like allowing them to serve, and individual accomplishments as well, like the first women that was promoted to general. I would recommend this website to anyone that would be interested in the role of women throughout the history of the United States military. It shows how they started at the bottom of the ranks as nurses, and how today they control military bases.

Mullins, Kristen . "Step Up to Law Enforcement". Vermont Works for Women. 04/18/2010 <http://www.nnetw.org/programs_for_women/step_up_to_law_enforcement.html>.

This website pointed out the positives for women in police. They gathered research from the National Center for Women and Policing to support their visions on why women are great police officers. The part we found most useful was the section about why women in police are in demand. This was so important because it shows a change in what once was a completely male dominated job. It also shows how women can prepare for a career in law enforcement. It was fairly useful but its research is very specific and limited. We did not get much out of it besides why women make good police officers.

"National Center for Women & Policing". Feminist Majority Foundation. 04/19/2010 <http://www.womenandpolicing.org/becominganofficer.asp>.

This website was designed for women who wish to have a career in law enforcement. It designed by the national center for women in law enforcement. It provides basic information about the hiring process and how to get through it step by step. It will help anyone who is interested in being a police officer that is a woman or that is doing research on how the hiring process works for women. We only used this site for is statistics on how many women are police officers today. Overall it is a useless website for research, outside of its limited number of statistics.

Price, Barbara . "FEMALE POLICE OFFICERS IN THE UNITED STATES". National Criminal Justice Reference Service. 04/15/2010 <http://www.ncjrs.gov/policing/fem635.htm>.

Provided a ton of information on women in police and how far they have come. It provided research on how women are still discriminated against, and the difference of discrimination of women police officers by race. The part of the article that we found to be the most useful was the studies that proved that women are fully capable of being a police officer when compared to men. This would be a great source for anyone that would like a general history of women in policing, problems women officers face, and proof that women should not be discriminated against in any aspect of policing.

"Report details extra problems women face in military careers". CNN. 04/14/2010 <http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/worklife/10/16/challenge.women.military/index.html>.

This was a very important site that was used for demonstrating all of the sociological problems women deal with in the military. It provided problems that are often overlooked, but that are very important to the women in armed forces. CNN compiled its information from a veterans' group report. They spoke on all of the issues women face in the military, but with a huge emphasis on sociological issues women face in the military. It covers ranking issues, family issues, lack of women supplies, and sexual harassment issues. I would recommend this source to anyone looking for sociological issues women face in the military.

"Women in the LAPD". Los Angeles Police Department. 04/17/2010 <http://www.lapdonline.org/search_results/content_basic_view/833>.

The LAPD provided us with a lot of information about how women first got into policing. They mentioned briefly what it was like for women prior to becoming “police officers”. The LAPD was the first police department in the nation to hire on a woman as a complete police officer with full responsibility. By the hiring of the first women police officer, a chain reaction was set off, and other cities followed with hiring women police officers as well. The article was very brief and would not benefit anyone that wanted to know anything outside of how women first got into policing. It only covers the first 30 years of women in police.

"Women in Policing ". Norfolk Police Department. 04/16/2010 <http://www.norfolk.gov/Police/recruitment/Norfolk_Women_In_Blue.asp>.

We used this site to get an inside feeling of how women in police view the job. We believed this website was useful since it was NPD officers describing their work. We only used quotes from this site from the views of current NPD officers. One negative attribute of this site was that it was a recruiting website for the Norfolk Police Department. With that being stated, you will not find any negative feedback about being a women in policing. This results in only hearing the positives of being a women police officer.
